Animal Welfare Labeling, will enable consumers in the European Union to express their concern for animals, by purchasing items certified to follow higher ethical standards in the treatment of animals. This will put economic pressure on farmers to stop cruelty and spread awareness of animal rights to all Europeans while they do their food shopping.[1]
Organic Food Labeling, enables consumers to buy food grown without the addition of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, and/or additives. Thus, now buyers have the choice of purchasing food that is rich in nutrition and healthier for their bodies compared with the non-organic options that although may have documented nutritional value they may also have side effects when consumed due to chemical substances. Organic farms now comprise up to 10% of total farmland in European countries.[2]
Fairtrade Labeling, refers to imported products from poor countries for which farmers are paid a fair price and from which profits are re-invested in local communities. The UK saw growth in Fairtrade products from 150 in 2003 to 1300 in 2006.[3]
